Service Highlights: Described Video

NCI Described Video is a service that allows programming to reach yet another extremely appreciative audience. With 14 million people who are blind or have low vision in America, described video provides important access to televised and recorded video programming. The service provides narration of visual elements, action, costumes and settings, where there is a pause in the dialogue. With the help of this narration, people who are visually impaired are now able to “paint a picture” in their minds of those images that others take for granted. The visual is made verbal. Joel Snyder, Director of Described Media, leads a staff of skilled writers who develop concise and objective descriptions, which are then professionally voiced and recorded.

NCI currently provides description for a wide range of outstanding programming, including favorites such as Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow and Dragon Tales. Several new series are also being described by NCI.

Maya and Miguel is a lively and colorful show about a set of ten-year-old bilingual twins and the richly diverse neighborhood where they live. The show also illustrates the portrayal of Latino family life, language and culture, with an overall message that shared happiness is more important than personal gain.

Nickelodeon's new live-action comedy series Ned’s Declassified Survival School Guide chronicles the wacky adventures of Ned as he shatters the “fourth wall” to share tips and tricks on navigating junior high hurdles.

For a more worldly view, Globe Trekker, public television's exhilarating and fast-paced travel/adventure series, chronicles explorers as they journey to countries on every continent of the globe.

And on Ovation, television’s only network devoted exclusively to the arts, NCI is describing a diverse mix of educational programming that provides behind-the scenes and front-row-center views of the arts from groundbreaking performances to intriguing documentaries about the productions and the people behind them.
