National Captioning Institute Foundation Acquires ULTECH

Major Accessibility Foundation Purchases High-Tech Equipment Manufacturer

WASHINGTON, DC - The National Captioning Institute (NCI) Foundation, a pioneer in closed captioning and media accessibility, announced today the acquisition of the equipment division of Mixed Signals Technologies that was formerly known as ULTECH Corporation. The company will operate as ULTECH LLC and will maintain its headquarters in Middlebury, Connecticut.

ULTECH, a developer of innovative data encoding and subtitling products for the broadcast industry, will expand its role to improve the accessibility of media and communications through technology.

"The mission of NCI's Foundation is to advance access to communications for all who need it," stated Gene Chao, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation. "With the move to digital television, much of these advances will be technology driven. We are very pleased to add ULTECH LLC to our effort to improve media access."

"This is a great opportunity to apply our technology to such a worthy cause," added Drake Smith, ULTECH Founder, President and Chief Operating Officer. "We look forward to solving problems in the areas of closed captioning, descriptive video and others requiring better accessibility."

About National Captioning Institute Foundation

The NCI Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of media access for all people who for whatever reason are limited in fully participating in the world of communications, heard, seen or written. The Foundation will oversee the operations of both ULTECH LLC and the National Captioning Institute as separate entities. The National Captioning Institute was established in 1979 as a nonprofit corporation to promote and provide closed captioning technology and services for the purpose of making television programming accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
