There are over 28 million Americans, nearly one out of ten
people, who either cannot hear at all or cannot hear well enough to fully
understand what is being said on television. Millions of other viewers
use captioning to watch programming in noisy areas such as restaurants,
airports, sport bars and health & fitness clubs-or to just improve their
reading skills.
What is Prerecorded Captioning?
Prerecorded, also known as off-line, captioning
is the preparation of captions for recorded programming so that, at
the time of air or tape playback, the captions are a part of the videotape.
Captions can be prepared in three different styles. Standard "Pop-on"
captions are timed and placed to synchronize with the program. "Center
Placement Pop-on" captions are centered at the bottom third of
the TV screen with speaker changes noted by a dash. "Roll-up" captions
scroll on and off the screen in a continuous motion. See
Prerecorded Process and Glossary
of Captioning Terms for more details. When programs are edited,
captions can be reformatted to match the new version.
