NCI Opens New Facility
To Accommodate Captioning Growth

Dallas Office to Supply Additional Multilingual Captioning Resources

Washington, DC—In response to the growing demand for closed captioning, the National Captioning Institute (NCI) has opened a new full-service production facility in Dallas, Texas. The facility expands NCI’s capacity to create closed captioning in English and Spanish for live and prerecorded programs plus subtitling in Spanish and other languages.

“Opening a facility in the Dallas area is a wonderful match of the available resources of a multilingual region and the need for captioning and subtitling in multiple languages,” said Jack Gates, President and COO of NCI.

The demand for closed captioning continues to increase dramatically as the television industry steadily expands the amount of captioned programming to meet the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements that virtually 100% of new English language programming be captioned by 2006. The FCC has also mandated that almost all new Spanish language programming be captioned by 2010.

Gates pointed out that in addition to the increased demand resulting from the FCC rules for television programming, captioning and subtitling of home videos and DVD’s in several languages is growing as more and more titles are released to the market. Captioning of live videoconferences, such as seminars and hearings, in the government and private sectors is also adding to the need for additional capacity.

In discussing the new facility, Gates noted that “As a result of our exploration of many options for expanding capacity, NCI selected Dallas due to several factors, including the availability of a high-quality multilingual workforce in the region and a central location in the country.”

NCI is headquartered in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and also has production facilities in Burbank, CA, New York, NY and London, England. The nonprofit National Captioning Institute is the global captioning leader, supplying the highest quality captioning and subtitling services to the television and home video industries.
