What is Spanish Real-time Captioning?

After years of research and development, NCI successfully implemented its first Spanish real-time captioning system in 2001. It is based, like English captioning, on the principles of court reporting, in which words are transcribed phonetically using a stenographic keyboard. The foundation of this remarkable accomplishment is a new Spanish stenotype theory and dictionary created by NCI personnel. The theory consists of a system for captioners to use in transcribing spoken Spanish into a phonetic code while maintaining proper spelling and grammar. A new computer program developed as part of the system then converts the phonetic code into readable Spanish captions. Captions are displayed in upper and lower case characters with appropriate accents. This allows us to offer the best quality and service available for real-time captioning at competitive rates!

What is Spanish prerecorded captioning?

Spanish prerecorded captioning, like English captioning, is the preparation of captions for recorded programming so that, at the time of air or playback, the captions are a part of the videotape or other program storage media. We will caption your programming in either of two styles. Standard "Pop-on" captions are timed and placed to synchronize with the program. "Roll-up" captions scroll on and off the screen in a continuous motion.

What is Spanish subtitling?

NCI, together with its London facility, the European Captioning Institute (ECI) provides a single source for all of your subtitling needs in more than 44 different languages, including Spanish. To ensure the best translations, we employ native speakers who regularly return to their country of origin to maintain fluency in their respective languages. Each translation is carefully edited to allow a comfortable reading speed for the viewer while maintaining the meaning and impact of the spoken word. We pay careful attention to quality and details. Names of places and people, as well as technical terms, are researched to verify correct spellings in each language. Native speakers of the subtitling languages review all work.

What is Internet Captioning and Subtitling?

NCI’s Internet Captioning and subtitling services deliver captioning text from live or prerecorded events on Webcasts. The audio from a live event is converted into a text stream by a highly skilled NCI real-time captioner and delivered for display on a Web site using a streaming media player such as the RealNetworks RealPlayer, Microsoft Media Player, or Apple QuickTime. The audio from prerecorded programs can be converted into captions or subtitles in any language and delivered for Webcasts or playback on computer networks or individual computers using media players.

What about CD-ROM and DVD support?

Caption and subtitle files can also be used with video content recorded on CD-ROM or DVD media. NCI can provide caption and subtitle files in the correct format for each type of media.
