NCI Internet and CD-ROM Captioning and Subtitling

Caption and Subtitle Your Digital Video

Reach the World on the World Wide Web

Did you know?

The Internet is rapidly becoming more than a visual display of information. A growing number of live events, prerecorded videos and other links to audio content are available on the Web. NCI will work with you to put your audiovisual content online and to make your Webcasts and other Web-based audio materials accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Through captioning, you will also reach people who are in locations where the sound could not be heard or would be distracting to others. Federal Web sites are required by Section 508 regulations to make audio information on their sites accessible to people with disabilities. In addition, captioning creates a verbatim record of an event and a searchable text file.

Similarly, subtitling audio content in multiple languages allows you to reach the large population of Internet users in the U.S. and around the world who do not speak English as a primary language.

What is Internet Captioning?

NCI's Internet Captioning services deliver captioning text from live or prerecorded events on Webcasts. The audio from a live event is converted into a text stream by a highly skilled NCI real-time captioner and delivered for display on a Web site using a streaming media player such as RealNetworks RealPlayer, Microsoft Windows Media Player or Apple QuickTime. The audio from prerecorded programs can also be converted into captions and delivered for Webcasts or playback on computer networks or individual computers using media players.

What is Internet Subtitling?

NCI’s Internet Subtitling service provides translations of your audio content into standard subtitling text formats that can be displayed using any widely available media player. You can reach the world on the World Wide Web by offering multiple languages. NCI provides subtitling in English, Spanish, French and more than 40 other languages and dialects.

Internet Captioning/Subtitling Services Include:

  • Real-time Captioning of Live Webcasting. A highly skilled NCI real-time captioner will remotely caption a live event as it takes place.
  • Prerecorded Captioning/Subtitling of Archived or off-line Programs for Webcasting. A master digital video file (Mpeg-1, AVI or WMV) with VISIBLE TIMECODE is preferred to ensure proper synchronization. The file can be delivered on CD or over the Internet using NCI's FTP site. NCI's talented captioning staff will provide a caption file back to you via the Internet. Caption files for streaming media players can be provided in standard file formats for RealPlayer, QuickTime and Microsoft Windows Media Player.

What about CD-ROM support?

Caption and subtitle files can also be used with video content on CD-ROM. A CD with the actual video file to be used on the final CD is the preferred video source. NCI can either provide you with just the caption or subtitle files in standard media player formats or combine them with the video on a CD-ROM. The CD will provide the option of displaying the video with a self-contained player or a player installed on the user’s computer.
