What's New in Public Television

NCI provided the first closed captioning for a PBS program 25 years ago and continues to provide closed captioning for an ever-growing number of public television programs. Public Television stations and independent producers have confidence in NCI to deliver the highest quality captions on-time and at competitive rates. For example, NCI is partnering with American Public Television (APT), a distributor of public television programming, and associated producers to caption a variety of new programs created to educate, inform and entertain the viewer. Some of these shows are Daisy Cooks!, Money Track, Barbecue University, SPY and Train Tracking. NCI will also help take viewers on E3 Electronic Field Trips, such as the March trip to the American Indian Museum in Washington, D.C.

Vibrant colors, remarkable flavors and a sense of tradition, Daisy Martinez’ cooking has it all. Spend a half-hour each week with Daisy as she salsas around the kitchen dancing her way into our hearts and our stomachs in Daisy Cooks! From the beginning, you’ll be able to tell how passionate Daisy is about her Latino heritage. Everything from its cooking to its music and history, Daisy shares more than recipes. Watch Daisy Cooks! and leave with more than a belly full of excitement.

In Money Track, the mission is to educate and inspire investors and consumers so they will learn to take more control over their own financial lives. The show features stories about investing, personal finances, and how to avoid common scams. Each story is about real people and their situations, and each episode will identify resources to help viewers learn more about a particular topic.

Barbecue University with Steve Raichlen covers all of the how-to’s and how comes of barbecuing and grilling. Each episode focuses on a particular theme such as “The World of Steak,” “High on Hog,” and “The Five Methods of Live Fire Cooking,” Viewers can also experience the Grill Cam, which includes two broadcast quality micro cameras inside the grills for a sizzling grate-level view of the action. Tune in and get your degree in Meats and Sauces from Barbecue University.

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a real spy? Is espionage all about gadgets, exotic locations and fancy cars? In SPY, your questions are answered as a group of ordinary people volunteers to leave their lives behind. They step into the shadows and become real spies. They must lie to family and friends, relocate to a new city and assume a whole new identity. Based in London, this reality series recruited eight applicants out of 5,000 total and turned them into actual spies trained by ex-members of MI6 and the CIA. The winner does not receive a million dollars or any cash prizes, but does get to call himself or herself a spy.

Train Tracking is where you need to be if flying in planes is not your cup of tea. The series focuses on interesting railroads and presents some of the people and cultures encountered along the way. Come along for the ride on some of the most scenic or unique rail journeys in such places as Switzerland, Canada, Austria, India, Scotland, Greece, England, Norway and Corsica. All Aboard! The train is about to pull out of the station and you don’t want to be left behind.
