NCI’s Description Portfolio

Descriptions Made Possible by Funding From the U.S. Department of Education**

NCI Described Video, which is also known as audio description, video description or DVI (Descriptive Video Information), provides access to television programming for people who are blind or have low vision, an estimated American audience of about 12 million. Through a detailed process that provides concise yet vivid descriptions of a program’s visual elements during pauses in the dialogue, NCI Described Video helps people who are visually impaired to “paint a picture” in their minds of those images that others take for granted.

Descriptions can be heard through the Secondary Audio Programming (SAP) option on the Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS) feature on most newer televisions and usually accessed through the remote control. With digital cable or satellite services, the SAP or alternate audio channels are selected using the remote for the set-top box. Check your local listings to see if the following programs are available in your area with descriptions.

Ken Burns’ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a highly acclaimed series that first aired on public television stations in 2009, is available on DVD and Blu-ray with video description. For more information about the series, click here to go to the PBS Website.
